Laser Resurfacing and Laser Peeling

Laser skin resurfacing is a proven procedure to remove wrinkles, age spots, acne scars, and other blemishes as well as tighten skin and balance tone.

Why laser facial resurfacing?

CO2 laser skin resurfacing efficiency is considered the “gold standard” of skin rejuvenation. It offers more cardinal changes in skin texture with a single treatment and can be highly effective in treating deep wrinkles, pigmentation, acne scarring, surgical scars, fine lines around the eyes and mouth.  Skin appears smoother in texture and pore size may be minimized following treatment due to the intense collagen production stimulated from the laser skin treatment. The face, neck, chest, hands and areas of surgical scars are the most common areas of CO2 laser skin resurfacing treatment.

Laser resurfacing can be deep and shallow, it is aimed at rejuvenation, wrinkle correction, and skin tightening. Peeling – to smooth the surface of the skin and eliminates acne scars. Both treatments can be combined with the same laser.

What is it?

Laser skin resurfacing uses a AcuPulse CO2 laser to remove thin layers of your skin. The laser beam destroys the outer layer of skin (epidermis). At the same time, the laser heats the underlying skin (dermis), which causes collagen fibers to shrink. As your skin heals, new skin forms that’s smoother and tighter.

How does the procedure work?

 

The therapeutic effect of the laser is based on the phenomenon of fractional photothermolysis. The essence of the method: the laser beam, penetrating deep into the skin, is divided into many microbeams, which create point microscopic damage in the skin. In areas of damage, intensive recovery processes are launched, since the ability of skin tissues to regenerate is very high. Point exposure provides a sufficient supply of healthy cells (which have not been exposed to microbeams), which serve as a source for the creation of new collagen and elastin. At the same time, the skin is significantly reduced and tightened – the point zones of damage “evaporate” the micro-sections of the skin.

At the cellular level, fractional thermolysis provides:

  • Active neocollagenesis (production of new collagen);
  • Strengthening the fibers of the elastin-collagen framework;
  • Synthesis of growth factors, renewal of new cells;
  • Growth of young epithelium.

When will I see the results?

You may see results as early as 2-3 weeks, but as with any treatment that works by stimulating collagen production, it may take 6-8 weeks to really start seeing meaningful improvement. The results continue to improve for 4-6 months after treatment and last up to 2 years.

Contraindications (Do not use if any of the following applies to you)

  • Skin diseases and tissue damage;
  • Fresh tan – less than 4 weeks after exposure to the sun;
  • Severe cardiovascular pathologies (including hypertension);
  • Herpes in the active stage;
  • Acute infectious diseases;
  • Uncompensated endocrine diseases (diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease);
  • Epilepsy;
  • Poor blood clotting (hemophilia);
  • Keloid and congenital scars at the site of exposure, a tendency to their formation;
  • Increased sensitivity to light and wave radiation;
  • During pregnancy or lactation;
  • Taking medications that increase sensitivity to solar radiation (vitamin A, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones);
  •   Malignant neoplasms. Untreated cancer of the skin or of an organ. Suspicious moles.
  •   Chronic skin diseases in acute stage, psoriasis (progressive stage)
  •   Immunosuppression (HIV, drugs with immunosuppressive effect)
  •   Inflammation in the area of treatment
  •   Use of Roaccutane at any time within the last 6 months (due to danger of keloid formation).

The main difference of laser resurfacing from laser peeling

If during laser peeling the penetration depth of the laser beam does not exceed 30 mkm, during laser resurfacing the radiation is carried out to a depth of 100-150 mkm. There is a partial destruction of basement membranes and dermal cells.

By replacing the old, damaged and weak elastin-collagen skeleton with a new, strong and integral one, a pronounced anti-aging effect is achieved, in some cases comparable to the results of a surgical lift.

The resurfacing procedure perfectly smooths out small scars, including keloids. Laser peeling is unable to neutralize the severity of scars.

Given the difference in the depth of exposure, the procedures accordingly have different indications. Laser peeling is more relevant for young patients (25-35 years old), and resurfacing is for people of older age categories (from 35 years old and above).

How to prepare for the procedure?

To reduce the rehabilitation time and accelerate healing, it is necessary to properly prepare for the procedure:

– 4 weeks in advance, you need to start protecting the skin from the sun’s rays – do not sunbathe (including in a tanning bed), in the summer use sunscreen with the protection of at least SPF 50.

– In case of inflammation on the skin, a week before the session, the face is cleaned, 3 days in advance, you need to drink anti-herpes preparations;

– With dehydrated skin, it is desirable to undergo a biorevitalization or plasma therapy procedure in order to deeply moisturize it and increase the efficiency of resurfacing;

– A few days before the procedure, it is necessary to stop taking blood thinners (after consulting a doctor);

  Stop take antibiotics in 14 days before treatment

  Stop exfoliating skin care products, such as retinols and glycolic acid, for one week before your treatment. This includes Retin-A

  Do not drink alcoholic beverages the day before and limit physical activity.

  Inform your Doctor  if you have taken Accutane (oral acne medication) in the past year.

Rehabilitation after the procedure

Laser skin resurfacing is very effective, but at the same time, it is a traumatic procedure.

Skin restoration begins immediately after the end of the procedure and takes place

in several stages:

– After polishing, there is a strong swelling and redness on the skin. The patient feels a burning sensation and moderate pain. These symptoms may remain for 10-14 days after the procedure.

– Maximum swelling appears on the 2nd day after the procedure and decreases from

3-4 days.

– In the first week, crusts form on the skin. It is prohibited to remove them independently, as this will lead to injury and subsequent scarring of the skin.

– After some time, the formed crusts fall off on their own. In their place new healthy and beautiful skin is formed.

 

Recommendations after the procedure

– In the first day after resurfacing, it is necessary to avoid direct sunlight on areas of the skin that have undergone resurfacing.

– During the first week it is necessary to minimize the intake of alcohol and salty foods.

– Do not visit the pool for at least 14 days.

– Do not take a hot bath or visit the sauna for at least 3 weeks.

– Do not sunbathe or visit a tanning bed for at least 4 weeks after the procedure.

– For 6 months, be sure to apply sunscreen with a protection level not lower than SPF 50 +.
